Livestock

Livestock, ranches and herd improvement

Pastoral ranches, genetic improvement of Chadian breeds, fodder crops and a meat value-chain project: livestock is at the heart of MED AGROPASCOM's agro-pastoral activity.

Cattle

Cattle breeding

MED AGROPASCOM works with livestock keepers and manages large cattle herds in controlled environments and fattening pens, with Chad's local breeds.

The Chadian breeds concerned

  • Kouri cattle

Famous for its spongy horns and its milk and meat qualities.

  • Arabo Zebu

A hardy breed suited to rangeland.

  • Bororo / Fulani Zebu

A hardy breed suited to rangeland.

Camels

Camel breeding

MED AGROPASCOM's field images also show herds of camels. Detailed information on this activity will be added to this page.

Goats

Goat breeding

Goat breeding is among the activities shown in MED AGROPASCOM's field images. Find the photos in the gallery below.

Animal feed

Fodder and animal feed

MED AGROPASCOM uses large grassland areas and hay-cutting perimeters, and grows sorghum and maize in particular. Cutting and baling meadow grass and cereal stalks feeds the ranches during the dry season.

Animal feed plant project

Project

The project plans a feed mill: local processing of crops (sorghum, maize, sesame cake) into pellets and meal, with finishing rations for fattening bulls. This plant is a project; it is not presented as already in operation.

Ranches

Pastoral ranches and genetic improvement

The pastoral ranch model aims to gradually settle pastoralism and add value to the national herd.

  • Developed ranches

Fenced ranches with water points, shade and vaccination corridors for rigorous health monitoring.

  • Genetic improvement

Selection and crossbreeding by artificial insemination on the main Chadian breeds: Kouri, Arabo Zebu and Bororo/Fulani Zebu.

  • Dry-season nutrition

Fodder meadows and hay-cutting perimeters to secure the herds' feed.

Meat

Project

Meat processing and export

The project plans to modernise slaughtering and the meat value chain, to supply urban markets and export.

  1. 1Modern slaughter
  2. 2Carcass maturation
  3. 3Cold chain
  4. 4Standard cutting
  5. 5Vacuum packaging

These items describe MED AGROPASCOM's project. They do not mean that these facilities are already in operation or that exports have already taken place.
